Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao - Great World City

Realised I have not really posted any food blog lately. Well, that's because I've not been to many extravagant restaurants lately...trying to save as much as I can for my wedding next year you see...sigh.

Without saying, I will order at least one basket of steamed Xiao Long Bao whenever I dine here. The best way to eat is not to poke a hole to drink the "soup" but to put the whole damn dumpling into your mouth and let the "soup" squirt into your throat. Shiok!

But today's highlight was actually the Double boiled Shark's Bone Soup with Wantons (see below). If I remember correctly, this shoud be new on the menu?

Fried Shanghai broad noodles. Like Udon but slightly softer. A nice change from the usual "La Mian".

Ginger soup with rice dumplings - the spicy ginger perks you up right away!

As good as it's Liang Court outlet. :)

Yasai Ramen - Veg with black pig shabu shabu.

Black Pig Char Siew Ramen

Teriyaki Silver Cod

Astons Specialties

Had this quite some time ago but forgot to post it. Will definitely be back to try the other steaks and side dishes. :)

Sheraton Towers - English High Tea

I was wrong to believe that food at a 5-star hotel cannot be that bad. Calories are simply wasted on bread-like "scones". To make things worse, I could not taste the freshness of the clotted cream to mask those "scones" and it tasted like it was whipped out of a can of Reddi Wip.

Well, the hotel's location did help me though... to make an easy decision not to go back for english high tea again... not even if it's a one-for-one offer.

S for scones at Fosters

All-time favorite Devonshire cream tea at Fosters is the best answer to your cravings for butter scones with clotted cream, homemade strawberry jam, freshly-baked cakes and finger sandwiches - without burning a hole in your wallet.

Though this English Cafe is tucked away at a corner of Holland Village, it has many regulars and can be noisy at times. Opt for the al-fresco area where you can find some tranquillity to round off a perfect English afternoon tea.

Seoul Yummy @ The Central

While waiting for about 20 mins for my table for 2, I took a business card from it's cashier counter and to my surprise, the owner behind this outlet is also the brains behind the franchise of Korean stalls found in a number of foodcourts.

Though the waiting time was dampening, the food arrives amazingly quick and my order all arrived soon after I've warmed my seat for 5 mins or so.

The appetizers (only 6? I thought the norm is 8 or more.) were pretty normal but the kimchi still packs a punch. It could have done more to include some Korean pancakes as an appetizer like some other authentic Korean restaurants I've tried.

They do have quite an extensive menu though and if you cannot decide what to have, try their set menus which you can mix and match some of their all-time favorites - just a pity that they do not have Ginseng Chicken Soup.

Overall, I would recommend this for an affordable Korean restaurant. So yummy?...nah, I would just say it is better then foodcourt standards.

Chilli Padi

The shopfront displayed numerous accolades and awards like Wine & Dine, Makan Sutra and even Tatler's best restaurant, but I guess I should have taken a closer look at the year which they had won the awards. I must admit that I was very much taken in by the price of S$13.80++ for a nonya buffet. Well, it's not that the food's yucky, but the buffet spread was not really what I had expected. There were very few dishes such that you not only can try every item at least once, you may be "forced" to have a second helping! I really wondered how it could continue to claim to be an award-winning restaurant if it doesn't keep up to its standards and fare. Below are all the dishes they had...you be your own judge.

The buffet bar (yes that's all)

Nonya Laksa

DIY kueh pie tie

Gado Gado

Pig's Stomach Soup (Is this nonya at all???)

Babi Assam

Chap Chye

Gado Gado (again)

Nonya Kuehs

more Nonya Kuehs...

Unidentified jelly

and more Nonya Kuehs...

is nonya coffee different? It tastes kinda weird...

Xin Yuan Ji Fish Charcoal Steamboat

I am sure the older generation would find this signboard familiar. Started as a charcoal fishhead steamboat specialist at a chinatown hawker stall, it has relocated (and expanded) its business to 31 Tan Quee Lan Street, opposite Bugis Junction.

I was taken aback when I took my first glance at the menu - $25 for small fishhead steamboat. That could buy me about 5 reasonably good servings of sliced fish bee hoon at a nearby coffeeshop or foodcourt. Take a peep into the restaurant and you'll find many willing people cramming inside a charcoal-fumed place, with every table ordering at least one of their signature charcoal steamboat. With that, I decided to find out just how good this steamboat is.

We did not wait long for a table for 2 and settled for a small charcoal fish MEAT (Ang-Gor-Lee fish) steamboat instead ($35) since we are not very good at sucking the collagen out of the fishheads. It came within minutes with soup filled to the brim...and oh boy it did not disappoint us :D To begin with, I didn't actually find the size of the steamboat small at all. As we dig in, I find that the portions were very generous too. Fish meat is what it promised as we helped ourselves to fish meat that could have served more than 5 sliced fish bee hoon! They also help to top-up the fish stock in case it evaporates faster than you eat. But it was just enough for the 2 of us as we slurped till its last drop, and in the process, discovered more ingredients that helped to create this wonderful fish soup - fried crispy sole fish, dang gui (angelica root) and preserved plum.

To avoid wasting food, order other dishes only if you are dining with 3 pax or more.

Jade at Fullerton

This GSS is by far the one with most dining promotions from big-name restaurants and 5-star hotels.

At Jade, the weekend dim sum buffet is going for $28++ per pax. The ala carte buffet menu has over 50 items including dim sum (without saying), appetizers, special dishes and rice/noodles. Tea is included, so be sure to order the exquisite Long Jing tea, it's much much nicer than those black teas like Pu'er, Tie Guan Ying etc.

Well, as for the quality of the food, it's so-so only. Probably I came with too high an expectation. In total, the 2 of us ordered less than 20 items, hence I would recommend that you go in a group of 3 since most of the items come in 3s.

Sorry for some 'noisy' pics due to the poor lighting as I inadvertently switched to ISO 1600.

BBQ Char Siew

Steamed Crystal Crab Dumpling
Steamed Abalone Siew Mai
Steamed Sharks Fin Dumpling

Steamed Pork Ribs in Black Bean sauce
Steamed Phoenix Claws

Century Egg with lean meat congee
Deep Fried Taro with Mushroom

Deep Fried beancurd roll with shrimp meat

And the last dish (what an irony...) is soup of the day, which is well-boiled. Don't really know what soup it is, although the waitress mentioned something like "apple".

Club Chinois

I will usually bring along my handy Lumix digicam wherever I go. You see, as it is not a compact camera, it does free up some weight off my barang barang. Plus the fact that of late nothing has caught my eye to take pics with...I decided to take a risk and leave home without my camera.

I was made to rue this decision one day when we settled for dinner at Club Chinois, a Western-Chineses fusion restaurant under the Tung Lok Group. Hence, I had to take pics using my back-up phone camera.

The ambience is quite nice (classy and dim) and I would highly recommend this place for people who are trying to impress their dates. Ask for the tables with high-back chairs situated at corners for added privacy =) But I must say that you must have patience for good food, as my orders came after some 20 to 30 minutes wait. Even plain steamed rice requires 5 minutes!

Steamed Lobster Bisque in Young Coconut ($18) - Delicious! With chunky pieces of lobster meat and a big scallop.

BBQ Crispy Pork Belly - Try it and you will never waste your calories on hawker centre ones anymore.

Red Garoupa with dried scallops & garlic in cassarole

Roasted Rack of Lamb with poached eggplant - a chef's recommendation.

HK Kai Lan with fried scallops & egg white - so-so...enough to share though.

Japanese Shitake with Seasonal vegetables - Nothing special. Can give the greens a miss.

Pu Tien & Bakerzin

GSS is here again but funnily, unlike previous years, I have not been able to chalk up $30 easily in a single receipt to enter the GSS lucky draw...wondered if it's because things are getting too cheap or am I getting stingier on my purchases. Dinner at Pu Tien was only $29.65 while the desserts at Bakerzin cost $19.30.
